The parks of Palácio do Governo are transformed for
the people, 1 November 2006
More than 3000 people will be able to enjoy the parks in front
of the Palácio do Governo when rehabilitation works are
completed, the Prime Minister Dr José Ramos-Horta said
today.
Forty-three Timorese are working to rehabilitate the area to
what it was when Timor-Leste was a Portuguese colony. Work started
on the major project in October and is expected to be completed
about Christmas.
"We are transforming this beautiful area into what it once
was, when the Portuguese were here," the Prime Minister said.
"These parks will provide a place of peace and beauty for
everyone. There will be lighting, gardens, chairs and tables.
I hope families will enjoy this beautiful area."
The large open spaces will feature a textured concrete finish.
The design is by Solomon Brothers of Dili and recreates the Portuguese
layout.
Dr Ramos-Horta said full-time security would operate in the park
area to provide a safe environment for everyone, particularly
families and tourists.
"We will have 60 guards dressed in traditional ceremonial
costumes - mainly from the districts," Dr Ramos-Horta said.
"They will dress in their traditional clothes and be there
24 hours a day.
"With the magnificent Dili waterfront and the Palácio
do Governo building as a backdrop, this will be a very special
place for people to relax and rest. This is part of our history
and we should be very proud of that."
Once the work is completed motor vehicle access to this area
will be limited to Members of Government and VIPs but extra parking
is also being provided outside of the park area.
