Messages of congratulations pour in for Dr Ramos-Horta, 12 May 2007

Prime Minister Dr. José Ramos-Horta is deeply moved by the outpour of congratulations and good wishes expressed in thousands of messages he has received since his election as President of the Republic.

Messages of support and encouragement started in the hours prior to the ballot day and surged to the thousands in the last few days, from common people from all the regions of the country to Presidents and friends of Timor-Leste all over the world.

"I feel deeply moved by the many calls and thousands of text messages I received from Timorese all over the country, from the poor and the humble to community leaders. This trust further encourages me to push forward my commitment to fighting poverty and developing our economy and our society", President elect Dr. José Ramos-Horta said.

Among congratulatory messages received from abroad are those from the President of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the President of Portugal, Aníbal Cavaco Silva, the Prime Minister of Australia, John Howard, the President of the European Comission, José Manuel Barroso, and from leaders of other neighbouring countries.

"I appreciated the calls from Presidents Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Aníbal Cavaco Silva. Besides offering their congratulations they also invited me to visit their countries and I invited them to Timor-Leste. Invitations were accepted", dr. Ramos-Horta added.

The conversation with President Susilo was also the opportunity to talk about issues of utmost interest for bilateral relations.

"President Susilo and I talked briefly about finalizing the demarcation of the land border between our two countries and implementing the border passes system, which will strengthen local trade as well as family and economic ties", Dr. Ramos-Horta said.

"I had also the opportunity to tell President Cavaco Silva of our interest in strengthen bilateral cooperation. Among other areas, Portugal can enlarge his assistance on police and military training", he said.

"The progress and development of our nation is long overdue and expectations are high. I will do everything in my power to contribute with political and economic leadership to bring a better life for our beloved country", affirmed the new president elect.
